Maytal Gotesman

Maytal’s illustrations explore the melding of human, animal and plant biology in surrealistic environments while visually referencing psychedelic 60’s poster art. Her art allows the viewer to meditate on our connection to the natural world; observe how veins resemble tree branches and a flower’s pistil and stamen echo the human reproductive system. Maytal begins each artwork with a stream of consciousness sketch; her hand guided by a wandering mind and muscle memory. Once the sketch has been established, she “fleshes” out the flat imagery with vibrant color and dimension; letting the seemly disparate elements melt and flow together giving the work a sense of movement and connection.
 
Maytal’s love of making art matches her passion for teaching art. Her philosophy on art education stems from her childhood experiences. Growing up, she discovered how making art helped her express emotions in a healthy way. She views art education as a pathway for others to use art as a form of self-expression and self-discovery. She teaches students the skills and knowledge for expanding their artistic potential and the confidence to use it.

After graduating with a BA in Studio Art from UC Santa Cruz, she began working at the San Jose Museum of Art as an Art Educator where her passion for teaching was ignited. She went on to complete a teaching credential from San Jose State University in 2018 with a focus on art education. Maytal is currently teaching 2D Art, 3D Art and Digital Photography at a Bay Area Middle School.
